Victoria Debt Debate Intensifies Ahead of November Election

Premier Ben Carroll and Opposition Leader Jess Wilson clash over Victoria's 165 billion dollar state debt as the November election approaches.

Victoria's state debt has emerged as a primary campaign issue for the November election, with net debt increasing from 22 billion dollars to 165 billion dollars over 12 years of Labor government. Ben Carroll, who became Premier in July, maintains that the state is transitioning into a growth phase following a period of heavy building. To address the financial burden, Carroll announced a royal commission into the integrity of major projects and plans to reduce the scope of the Suburban Rail Loop to save 2 billion dollars.

Opposition Leader Jess Wilson has pledged to return the budget to a cash surplus by 2032. Her proposed strategy includes implementing a hiring freeze on back-office public servants and introducing various tax cuts to stimulate the economy.

While some experts suggest the state's debt-to-gross product ratio of 24 per cent is not alarming, the advocacy group Amplify Australia warns that finances have reached a tipping point. The group notes that interest repayments already nearly double the state's spending on policing and warns that these costs will rival school spending by the end of the decade.
