Indian Opposition Protests Over NEET-UG Leaks and Defection Laws

Opposition lawmakers in India filed notices to suspend official business in both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha on July 22, 2026, to demand discussions on national crises. Sanjay Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party sought a Rajya Sabha discussion regarding the NEET-UG question paper leak and the health of activist Sonam Wangchuk, arguing that recurring breaches have shaken public confidence in the examination system. Following claims that the government blocked these debates during the Monsoon Session, leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Akhilesh Yadav staged a protest near the Prime Minister's residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. Opposition members from the Samajwadi Party and Congress accused the administration of avoiding accountability and utilizing a blame game to evade responsibility for institutional failures.

Lawmakers asserted that the government's refusal to engage in constructive discussion has forced students and unemployed citizens to take grievances to the streets, specifically citing the police action during the July 20 Chalo Sansad march. Members of Parliament argued that the government is mocking democracy by repeatedly adjourning House proceedings to stifle critical debate.
