General Motors Reinstates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in 2027 Trucks

General Motors is reinstating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reversing a 2023 decision to phase out phone-mirroring technologies in favor of proprietary software. The reversal follows significant customer backlash and data indicating that the absence of these features was a dealbreaker for many buyers. The new connectivity will debut on the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks before expanding across the company's broader portfolio.

Developed jointly with Apple and Google, the updated infotainment system features a split-screen layout. Instead of occupying the entire display, smartphone apps will appear in a contextual card or dedicated window. This allows drivers to access phone apps while simultaneously viewing native vehicle functions, such as trailer-aware navigation, towing metrics, and tire pressure. The interface also includes a jet-black background with high-contrast icons and larger tap zones to reduce driver distraction.

Additional updates include a 3D real-time view of surrounding vehicles and pedestrians for the Super Cruise driver assistance system, passenger-side streaming services, and a dedicated trailering display. While the company plans to expand the new UI across its lineup, it has not yet confirmed if the split-screen integration will return to its electric vehicle models. This strategic shift occurs alongside broader cost-cutting measures at the company, including the deployment of collaborative robots at its Factory Zero plant and the layoff of hundreds of engineers.
