Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos Outlines New Growth and Content Strategy
Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos shifts company focus toward engagement and revenue while expanding into live programming and bespoke theatrical releases.
Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos announced a strategic shift in how the company measures success, moving away from subscriber counts to prioritize engagement and revenue. While Sarandos acknowledged that overall growth is not as fast as he would like, he reported that the company achieved double-digit revenue growth across every region last quarter.
To drive further expansion, the company is investing in live programming, which currently represents 5% of the content budget and 1% of viewership. Sarandos described live events as a powerful tool for user sign-ups and retention. He also detailed a more flexible distribution model, utilizing bespoke theatrical windows for upcoming films such as Narnia and Lola Negra to maximize their value.
Addressing industry challenges, Sarandos advocated for a federal film tax credit in the United States to prevent production jobs from migrating to the United Kingdom, which he noted is highly competitive. He also defended the company's relationships with creators, explaining that the departures of Shawn Levy and the Duffer Brothers were motivated by their own interests in pursuing theatrical cinema.
