SpaceX Invests $27.6 Billion to Launch Direct-to-Consumer Mobile Service

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is transitioning Starlink into a major mobile carrier after investing $27.6 billion in spectrum licenses to compete with global telcos.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is expanding its Starlink service from a rural broadband provider into a direct-to-consumer mobile carrier. The company invested approximately $27.6 billion to acquire spectrum licenses from Grain Management and EchoStar, with plans to launch its mobile service in the United States by the end of next year.

This strategic shift caused share price declines for major U.S. operators T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T, as well as UK firms BT and Vodafone. While Starlink currently serves 13 million broadband customers globally, it faces capacity constraints in urban areas. To address this, the company is deploying next-generation V3 satellites to increase network capacity.

In the United Kingdom, Starlink partnered with Virgin Media O2 to provide remote coverage. However, the company faces significant regulatory hurdles in Europe and the UK regarding the reallocation of the 2GHz spectrum band. These challenges have created tensions with the European Commission and may lead European telecommunications firms to form alliances to block Starlink's expansion.
