Alstom Secures Train Contract and Launches Melbourne G Class Trams

The mobility provider Alstom expanded its rail presence in Australia by securing a €270 million contract from the Victorian Government for 25 additional X'trapolis 2.0 trains. The order, exercised via a contract option, brings the total program fleet to 50 trains. These six-car electric units, which entered service in May 2026, are manufactured in Victoria with a 60 percent local content requirement to support regional skilled jobs.

Simultaneously, Alstom delivered the first of 100 Next Generation G Class trams into passenger service in Melbourne. This rollout marks the start of a A$700 million contract awarded in 2022. Based on the Flexity 2 design, the low-floor vehicles are built at the Dandenong site with over 65 percent local content. They are designed to replace legacy high-floor Z and A class trams, featuring regenerative braking and capacity for over 150 passengers.

The G Class trams are currently operating on routes 57, 59, and 82, with maintenance based at a new facility in Maidstone. The program involved a A$40 million capital investment by Alstom and supported more than 2,000 jobs. Guillaume Tritter, Alstom's Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand, stated that the program is proof that rollingstock can and should be built in Australia by Australians.
