Arunachal Pradesh Government Offers Dialogue Over Siang Dam Project
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein announced the state government is open to dialogue with community and student groups regarding the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project.
The Government of Arunachal Pradesh is seeking to resolve escalating tensions surrounding the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), a hydropower initiative designed to generate 11,200 MW of electricity. Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein announced that the state is open to dialogue with student bodies, community organizations, and civil society groups to resolve differences through expert consultations and informed discussions.
The project has faced intense opposition from local organizations and political figures. Congress President Bosiram Siram claimed the project could result in the submergence of 27 villages. Chief Minister Pema Khandu has previously met with indigenous forums and legislators to address environmental concerns and national security implications.
Public unrest has led to clashes and legal disputes. Youth organizations have petitioned the home minister for the release of underage students arrested during protests. Additionally, the Arunachal Publishers and Broadcasters Guild condemned police attempts to obtain a search warrant against journalist Tongam Rina, highlighting a growing conflict between state authorities and those criticizing the project.
