UK Pub Closures Forecast to Reach 360 by Year End
The British Beer & Pub Association warns that 360 pubs will close by year end, causing 5,000 job losses amid high taxes and energy costs.
The British Beer & Pub Association reports that 295 pubs closed across Britain by the end of September 2026, with total closures forecast to reach 360 by the end of the year. This trend is expected to result in 5,000 job losses, more than half of which affect workers under 25. England saw 226 closures, primarily in the South East and North West, while Scotland lost 64 and Wales lost five.
The association attributes the crisis to a heavy tax and regulatory burden, noting that November 2025 budget measures added £322 million in costs for pubs and brewers. While the association welcomed a promised 20% cut in business rates for next year, it is calling for permanent rates reform, a freeze on beer duty, and a review of employment costs for young workers.
Individual businesses are facing acute financial pressure. The Chequers Inn, a 612-year-old pub in Lamberhurst, Kent, faces potential closure following a disputed £55,589.77 energy bill from Yorkshire Gas and Power. Owners Becky Gomery and Rich Spicer claim a faulty smart meter caused the charge. Although the energy ombudsman ordered a meter inspection and suspended debt collection, the owners warn the bill remains unaffordable and threatens 20 jobs.
