Visier Identifies Performative AI Trend Among US Workers

Workforce intelligence company Visier reports that nearly half of US employees exaggerate their AI skills due to job insecurity and leadership trust gaps.

Workforce intelligence company Visier has identified a trend called performative AI, where employees exaggerate their expertise or usage of artificial intelligence to colleagues and leadership. A survey of US employees found that nearly half of workers have exaggerated their AI skills, and 45% feel pressure to use the technology even when they lack confidence in its effective application.

This behavior is driven by employer mandates, productivity comparisons, and fears of job loss. Visier reports a significant trust gap, noting that 59% of workers are uncertain if their employer has a plan for AI integration, while only 28% believe their leaders fully understand how the technology is being used. Some workers engage in loud working to signal value to stakeholders to avoid being replaced.

While performative use is rising, data from Gallup and Jobs for the Future indicates a tangible productivity divide. Regular AI users report higher productivity and quality of work compared to irregular users. This occurs as AI continues to be a prominent reason for job cuts, as reported by the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
