Kenya Opposition Accuses Ruto Government of Fueling Political Violence

Opposition leaders and human rights groups accuse President William Ruto's administration of using hired gangs to intimidate political rivals ahead of upcoming elections.

Opposition leaders in Kenya have accused the administration of William Ruto of overseeing an escalation in political violence, citing recent confrontations in Kisumu and Nyahururu. Former Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, speaking for the opposition coalition, demanded independent investigations into these incidents and accused Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo of compromising the neutrality of security agencies through partisan politics.

The tensions come as reports emerge of hired political gangs disrupting public events, including a June attack on a civic forum at Nairobi's All Saints Cathedral. Amnesty International Kenya reported that some attackers confessed to being sent by powerful government officials, while witnesses alleged police provided protection to the gangs. The Kofi Annan Foundation has categorized Kenya as having a high risk of election-related violence due to institutional mistrust and economic hardship.

President Ruto acknowledged the existence of these groups but characterized them as innocent children manipulated by bankrupt politicians. He called for the gangs and their financial sponsors to be dealt with firmly. These clashes precede the July 16 parliamentary by-election in Ol Kalou, which the opposition views as a critical test of electoral impartiality and professional policing.
