NRSC Releases AI Deepfake Ad Targeting Texas Senate Candidate

The National Republican Senatorial Committee released an 85-second AI-generated deepfake advertisement featuring Democratic U.S. Senate candidate for Texas, James Talarico. The hyper-realistic video depicts a simulated Talarico reading and praising his own past social media posts from 2013 and 2021 regarding race, religion, and transgender issues.

While the NRSC included a small AI GENERATED disclosure on screen and a narrator describing the segment as a dramatic reading, digital forensics experts and critics argue the warnings are insufficient and the content is deceptive. The NRSC defended the advertisement as an effective way to visualize a candidate's own authentic public statements. The Talarico campaign condemned the tactic as an attempt to mislead voters.

The advertisement is legal under Texas law, which criminalizes deceptive deepfakes only within 30 days of an election. The incident has prompted Democratic Senator Andy Kim to call for federal legislation to protect Americans from dangerous deepfakes as part of a broader trend of synthetic media in the 2026 midterm cycle.
