Catherine Mann Advocates Hawkish Bank of England Policy

Catherine Mann, a member of the Bank of England, is advocating for a more restrictive monetary policy to combat inflation. She is currently one of three members within the institution favoring this hawkish approach.

Mann argues that monetary policy influences inflation beyond simple demand-side effects. She asserts that policy decisions immediately shape how firms and households view future prices, which subsequently impacts wage demands and pricing strategies. Regarding this mechanism, Mann stated, "I don't have to wait for a demand effect to see implications for my decisions on the CPI and especially on CPI expectations."

She also highlighted the role of supply shocks and global spillovers, particularly those originating from the United States, in affecting the United Kingdom economy. Mann described the Bank of England as a debate-oriented institution that relies heavily on research to navigate a macroeconomic environment that lacks the stability of previous eras.
