Zambia Police Summon Opposition Leaders After Fatal Raid
Zambia Police Service summoned opposition leader Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu for questioning following a disputed election and a fatal security raid in Lusaka.
The Zambia Police Service has summoned opposition leader Brian Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, for questioning regarding alleged criminal activities and threats to national security. The summons follows the August 13 presidential election, where President-elect Hakainde Hichilema won with nearly 61% of the vote. Mundubile has pledged to challenge these results in court.
Election observers, including the European Union and the Christian Churches Monitoring Group, reported an uneven playing field and inflated voter turnout across 30 constituencies. Tensions peaked when security forces raided Mundubile's home in Lusaka, an operation that left former Transport Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya dead. Police described the event as a shootout, but Mundubile asserted that Kafwaya was unarmed and dismissed claims of a foreign-backed coup plot as hogwash.
Police Inspector General Graphel C. Musamba stated that Mundubile and Zulu have sought refuge with an unnamed international organization. Musamba noted that the government has provided assurances that the suspects are entitled to due process and that their fundamental human rights will be respected.
