US Space Force Activates Special Operations Command
The United States Space Force activated the Space Forces Special Operations Command to integrate space, cyber, and intelligence capabilities into special operations units.
The United States Space Force activated the Space Forces Special Operations Command (SPACEFOR-SOC) on October 7. Headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida, the new command represents the first service component added to the United States Special Operations Command since 2006.
SPACEFOR-SOC will train and equip Space Force Guardians to deliver mobile, low-signature space, cyber, and intelligence capabilities to special operations units. This initiative, known as Space Special Warfare, focuses on protecting critical functions such as communications, intelligence, and GPS navigation, particularly in environments with poor connectivity.
The activation follows a strategic shift toward treating space as a contested warfighting domain. This move comes after the deployment of space and cyber forces in operations against Iran and Venezuela, and amid the ongoing electromagnetic spectrum conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
