Italy Pledges €150 Million as Trucker Blockades Halt Pasta Production

The Italian government pledged over €150 million in aid after trucker blockades in southern Italy disrupted food supplies and halted national pasta production.

Truck drivers across southern Italy launched widespread blockades of roads, motorways, and ports on October 20, 2026, to protest soaring diesel prices and the rising cost of living. The demonstrations, coordinated by groups including the Sicilian Transport Committee and Fedralog Calabria, targeted the commercial port of Naples and the A1 and A30 motorways, causing fuel shortages and supermarket deficits of fresh produce.

The Government of Italy responded to the crisis by announcing an aid package worth over €150 million for road hauliers, as detailed by Deputy Infrastructure Minister Edoardo Rixi. Transport Minister Matteo Salvini also scheduled meetings with national industry associations to address delayed funds. Despite these gestures, the economic impact has been severe; Confcommercio Sicily estimated losses for retailers and the fresh-produce supply chain at €40–50 million over five days, while Confagricoltura warned that perishable agricultural goods in Sicily might be destroyed.

The disruptions have crippled the national pasta industry, with producers such as Rummo and La Molisana suspending or reducing production due to a lack of raw materials. CEO Cosimo Rummo reported that most of the country's pasta production has ground to a halt. Simultaneously, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's administration is preparing a security crackdown following separate inflation-related riots in Milan and other northern cities.
