Daimler Truck North America Plans Largest U.S. Assembly Plant
Daimler Truck North America will build its largest U.S. assembly plant by 2029 while closing its Portland facility in October 2026.
Daimler Truck North America plans to construct its largest U.S. assembly plant to date, with construction scheduled to begin by the end of 2026 and operations expected by 2029. The company is currently evaluating multiple sites based on infrastructure, supply chain access, and workforce availability. The new facility will feature a digital backbone and flexible manufacturing systems to produce autonomous, electric, vocational, and on-highway chassis.
This strategic investment aims to modernize production technology to achieve a better cost position and reduce the company's exposure to U.S. tariffs on imports from Mexico. The expansion comes amid high demand, with the 2026 order book already approximately 95% full.
Concurrent with the expansion, the company is winding down its manufacturing operations in Portland, Oregon. The Portland plant will permanently close at the end of October 2026, resulting in nearly 400 job losses.
