TikTok CEO Predicts AI Scientific Breakthroughs Within Three Years

Shou Zi Chew predicts AI will drive major breakthroughs in physics and biotech by 2029 while warning of significant cybersecurity risks.

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew predicted at the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore that artificial intelligence will drive major scientific breakthroughs in physics, biotech, chemistry, and material science within the next three years. Chew stated that while the short-term impact of AI may be overestimated, its long-term potential is underappreciated.

This outlook aligns with recent developments at ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, which unveiled Protenix-v2. This AI model focuses on biomolecular structure prediction to accelerate drug discovery.

Despite his optimism, Chew warned of significant cybersecurity risks and ethical challenges. He specifically cautioned that autonomous AI agents could make unintended purchases or be leveraged by malicious actors to carry out cheaper, more sophisticated fraudulent activities. He emphasized the need for stronger safeguards and alignment to ensure powerful AI systems operate within human ethical boundaries.
