DraftKings CEO Urges Parents to Discuss Gambling Addiction
DraftKings CEO Jason Robins called for transparent parental conversations about gambling addiction as sports betting disorder diagnoses rise among young American men.
DraftKings CEO Jason Robins urged parents to maintain transparent conversations with their children regarding gambling addiction during an interview with CNBC. Robins noted that he has discussed the subject and industry terminology with his own children, stating that such discussions are necessary for every parent as sports betting becomes more widespread.
The call for open communication follows data showing a 61% increase in gambling disorder diagnoses in states with legalized sports betting between 2018 and 2026. Young men aged 18 to 29 are the most affected demographic, and the National Council on Problem Gambling reports that 8% of American adults have experienced problematic gambling behavior.
Robins detailed the Responsible Gaming tools provided by DraftKings, which include self-exclusion and account limits. He compared the potential requirement for customers to set gambling limits to wearing a seat belt. Additionally, Robins noted that the Responsible Online Gaming Association is attempting to establish a nationwide self-exclusion list, though the effort faces various regulatory and privacy challenges.
