Democrat Shannon Taylor Flips Virginia's 1st Congressional District
Democrat Shannon Taylor defeated Republican incumbent Rob J. Wittman to win Virginia's 1st Congressional District, securing 51% of the vote.
Democrat Shannon Taylor won the election for Virginia's 1st Congressional District, defeating Republican incumbent Rob J. Wittman. The Associated Press officially called the race on Thursday, with unofficial results showing Taylor winning 51% of the vote to Wittman's 48.7%.
Taylor, who served as the Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney for 14 years, campaigned on a platform to fight corruption in Washington by implementing a ban on stock trading and a lifetime federal lobbying ban for members of Congress. She declared victory on election night alongside Governor Abigail Spanberger, stating her campaign began because the community and country had fallen victim to a "corrupt and unaccountable Washington."
Rob J. Wittman, who had held the seat for 10 terms since 2009, conceded the race in a statement. Analysis from the Virginia Public Access Project indicated a leftward shift across every locality in the district, including a 14-point swing in James City County and a 25.4-point win for Taylor in Henrico. Wittman narrowly won York County with 50% of the vote.
This victory contributes to Democrats holding eight of Virginia's 11 congressional districts.
