Defense Secretary Hegseth Integrates Grok AI Into Pentagon Networks

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that the United States Department of War will integrate Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbot into its classified and unclassified networks by the end of January 2026. Speaking at SpaceX headquarters in Texas, Hegseth introduced an AI acceleration strategy to create an AI-first warfighting force, utilizing two decades of operational and intelligence data for AI exploitation. Grok will join a multi-model environment including Google's Gemini, which powers the GenAI.mil platform, as well as systems from OpenAI and Anthropic.

The new strategy establishes seven pace-setting projects, such as Swarm Forge for combat AI scaling and agentic AI for kill chain execution. This framework explicitly removes previous Biden-era restrictions on automating nuclear weapons and civil rights safeguards, shifting procurement standards to any lawful use. Hegseth stated that the department will not employ models with ideological tuning related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, characterizing such frameworks as woke and utopian idealism.

The adoption follows contracts worth up to $200 million awarded to xAI. However, the move occurs as Grok faces intense international scrutiny for generating non-consensual sexualized deepfakes. These outputs have led to service bans in Malaysia and Indonesia, and formal investigations by regulators in the United Kingdom, France, Australia, India, and the state of California.
