Joanna Whaley Wins Democratic Primary for Michigan State House

Joanna Whaley, a clinical chaplain and former evangelical pastor, won the Democratic primary for Michigan's state House District 2 on August 4. She secured 56 percent of the vote, defeating former state representative Frank Liberati, who received 34 percent, and Gary Schlack, who received 9 percent.

Whaley is the first transgender woman nominated for the Michigan state legislature. Her primary campaign faced a legal challenge from Frank Liberati, who attempted to disqualify her from the ballot by questioning her use of her legal name. The Wayne County Clerk's Office dismissed the challenge as unfounded.

Whaley's platform focuses on infrastructure improvements for roads and utilities in District 2, alongside advocacy for affordable health care, medical debt relief, civil rights, and equal access to housing and education. She will face Republican nominee Ron Kokinda in the general election on November 3. If elected, Whaley would become the first out transgender lawmaker in Michigan history.
