Data Center Boom Drives Mid-Atlantic Power Price Surge
PJM Interconnection reports skyrocketing electricity prices in Maryland and Northern Virginia as data center demand outpaces fragile grid capacity.
Power markets in the Mid-Atlantic region are facing severe strain and surging electricity prices, centered primarily in Maryland and Northern Virginia. According to data from PJM Interconnection, power generation capacity prices jumped to approximately $333.44 per megawatt day, a massive increase from the sub-$50 levels recorded in 2023.
The crisis stems from a combination of a fragile power grid and a surge in energy demand driven by the data center boom, particularly in Northern Virginia's 'Data Center Alley.' Critics attribute the instability to green policies and "apocalyptic environmentalism" that removed stable fossil fuel generation from the grid.
While utilities such as Exelon are working to build new power plants to bridge the supply gap, some argue the Government of Maryland has prioritized ideological agendas over reliability planning.
