AI Spending Spree Triggers Bond Market Anxiety
Major technology companies face widening credit spreads and rising borrowing costs as massive artificial intelligence investments clash with geopolitical energy shocks.
Bond market volatility is increasing as hyperscalers accelerate capital expenditure for artificial intelligence infrastructure. Alphabet Inc. raised its full-year capex guidance to as much as $205 billion, a move that resulted in the company reporting negative quarterly cash flow for the first time since its public offering.
Investors are demanding higher returns to offset these AI-tied costs, causing credit spreads to widen for companies including Amazon and Meta Platforms Incorporated. Meta is currently seeking financing for a $12 billion Texas data center amidst these higher borrowing rates. Oracle has become a focal point for debt fears after S&P Global downgraded its credit rating to BBB-, sending its credit default swaps to multi-year highs.
These financial pressures are compounded by geopolitical instability. U.S. military strikes in Iran and Houthi attacks on Saudi tankers in the Red Sea have pushed oil prices above $100 a barrel. The resulting inflationary environment is driving higher Treasury yields and increasing the cost of the energy and hardware required for AI buildouts, a trend GE Vernova leadership warns will persist.
