WhatsApp Blocks User Accounts During Widespread Service Outage
WhatsApp blocked numerous user accounts for compliance reviews while simultaneously experiencing a global outage affecting media uploads and connectivity across several countries.
On August 3, 2026, WhatsApp experienced a simultaneous global service disruption and a wave of temporary account blocks. The outage left thousands of users in the United States, United Kingdom, India, and Mexico unable to upload status updates, send media files, or maintain stable connections, with some reporting total application crashes.
Parallel to these technical issues, the platform placed numerous user accounts, primarily in India, under a 24-hour review. Starting around 8 p.m. IST, affected users were blocked from accessing chat histories, backups, and all app features. Notifications informed these users that their device information and account activity were being checked for compliance with the company's terms of service.
A WhatsApp spokesperson acknowledged that automated enforcement systems can occasionally flag legitimate accounts incorrectly. The spokesperson stated that the company works to ban accounts to prevent abuse and keep users safe, adding that they aim to fix such mistakes quickly to restore access. Meta Platforms Incorporated, the parent company, has not issued a formal statement explaining the cause of the outage or the specific scale of the account reviews.
