Bank of America Adopts Risk-Off Strategy Amid Market Headwinds

Bank of America recommends a risk-off approach for one month due to inflation, potential rate hikes, and upcoming U.S. midterm elections.

Bank of America has adopted a risk-off investment strategy for the next month, citing four primary headwinds facing the stock market. Strategist Michael Hartnett identified these risks as a likely Federal Reserve interest rate hike on October 28, elevated oil prices resulting from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, potential Democratic gains in the November 3 midterm elections, and volatility in artificial intelligence assets.

Inflation remains a primary driver of market instability, with the September consumer price index rising 3.7% and the producer price index increasing 6.3%. Hartnett suggests that a rate hike is necessary to restore credibility after 66 consecutive months of the consumer price index exceeding the 2% target.

Despite the cautious outlook, the bank recommends that clients increase exposure to consumer discretionary stocks, REITs, and small-cap stocks. Hartnett characterizes these specific assets as peak yield beneficiaries that may perform well amid the current economic climate.
