Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa Outlines Plan to Reverse GOP Policies

Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa announced plans to overhaul Texas public schools and healthcare while appointing a former Republican to her transition team.

Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa outlined a legislative vision on Thursday at the University of Texas to reverse Republican policies across public lands, public schools, healthcare, and energy and grocery costs. Following a midterm election that gave Democrats control of the governor's seat and the state House, Hinojosa proposed firing the state superintendent of schools and implementing a moratorium on data centers.

Hinojosa expressed a commitment to bipartisan lawmaking and appointed former Republican state Representative Ernest Bailes to her transition team. She stated that elected leaders must respect the will of the people, who she claims "want change."

Despite these efforts toward bipartisanship, the Republican-controlled state Senate is pursuing legislation to limit the authority of Hinojosa and Lieutenant Governor-elect Vikki Goodwin. The shift in power also includes the election of Senator-elect James Talarico, who is expected to maintain a moderate approach to preserve Democratic gains in the state.
