Bard College President Retires Amid Jeffrey Epstein Ties
Leon Botstein retired as president of Bard College following revelations about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and a subsequent House Judiciary Committee inquiry.
The longtime president of Bard College, Leon Botstein, was forced to retire in June 2026 after Justice Department documents revealed his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. An independent review conducted by the law firm WilmerHale found that Botstein did nothing illegal but had not been fully accurate when describing the relationship to the college community. Botstein has defended his actions, stating his dealings with Epstein were motivated by the need to raise funds for the institution.
Despite his resignation from the presidency, Botstein maintains a significant presence at the college. He continues to teach, serve as the artistic co-director of the Bard Music Festival, and lead The Orchestra Now and the American Symphony Orchestra. He also remains in the official residence of the college president.
This continued association has triggered backlash from alumni and staff. Botstein is now the subject of a House Judiciary Committee inquiry led by Representative Jamie Raskin, which is examining Epstein's dealings with the college. Meanwhile, acting president Jonathan Becker is managing the search for a permanent successor while attempting to stabilize the campus environment.
