South Africa Seeks Billions in Chinese Energy Investment

Minister of Electricity and Energy Kgosientsho Ramokgopa led a South African delegation to Beijing for the South Africa-China Electricity and Energy Investment Conference to secure funding for the country's energy transition. South Africa aims to mobilize R2.2 trillion ($122 billion) for new electricity generation and R440 billion for 14,500 kilometers of new transmission infrastructure. Under the Integrated Resource Plan 2025, the government intends to add 105 gigawatts of capacity by 2039, focusing on solar, wind, and diversified energy sources.

The mission resulted in advance interest from six Original Equipment Manufacturers and a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute and the China National Nuclear Corporation regarding nuclear waste disposal technologies. Additionally, Sasol commissioned Envision to design a green hydrogen system for its Sasolburg operations to produce eMethanol and sustainable aviation fuel.

Experts and officials emphasized that the partnership aims to move beyond traditional trade toward direct investment and technology transfer. The strategy focuses on leveraging China's expertise in smart grid management and battery storage to resolve transmission bottlenecks that currently prevent renewable energy from the Eastern and Western Cape provinces from reaching demand centers like Gauteng. This cooperation is intended to establish local manufacturing hubs for solar components and high-voltage infrastructure, supporting both industrial expansion and employment.
