Karnataka Cabinet Raises Nandini Milk Prices by Rs 8
The Karnataka government increased milk prices by Rs 8 per litre to support farmers, prompting the Bengaluru Hotels Association to warn of higher menu costs.
The Government of Karnataka approved an Rs 8 per litre increase in milk prices effective November 1, 2026. Under the new structure, the price of Nandini basic toned milk will rise from Rs 46 to Rs 54 per litre. The government will allocate Rs 7 of the hike directly to milk-producing farmers and Re 1 to dairy cooperatives to cover operational costs.
This adjustment raises the base price paid to farmers from Rs 35 to Rs 42 per litre. When combined with a continuing government incentive of Rs 5, farmers will receive a total of Rs 47 per litre. The decision follows protests from producers and legislative demands for increases of up to Rs 15 per litre to offset rising costs for fodder, cattle feed, and transportation.
Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stated the move prevents losses for farmers and stops milk from being routed to neighboring states with higher prices. Other ministers defended the hike as a necessary measure to strengthen farmers financially. In response, the Bengaluru Hotels Association warned that the steep increase, alongside rising rice prices, will force hotels to raise the costs of coffee, tea, snacks, and meals. The association urged the government to limit the hike and reduce administrative costs to protect consumers.
