Waymo Launches Ojai Robotaxi with Google Gemini AI
Waymo deployed its next-generation Ojai robotaxi in three major U.S. cities, featuring a custom Zeekr minivan design and integrated Google Gemini AI assistance.
Waymo launched its next-generation robotaxi, the Ojai, for riders in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. The new vehicle is a minivan manufactured by Zeekr on the SEA-M platform, designed to reduce construction, operation, and maintenance costs compared to the previous Jaguar I-Pace fleet. The Ojai utilizes the company's sixth-generation self-driving system and is expected to expand to Denver, Las Vegas, and San Diego later this year.
As part of the rollout, the company integrated Google Gemini AI as an in-car conversational assistant. This system allows passengers to request temperature adjustments, trivia, and local recommendations, though it remains separate from the autonomous Waymo Driver and cannot control vehicle routing. The cabin also features a redesigned user interface across three screens and a Calm Mode to minimize stimulation during trips.
Waymo currently operates approximately 300 Ojai vehicles. While the company aims to import 5,000 units by the end of 2026, it faces increased expenses due to U.S. import tariffs on vehicles manufactured in China.
