Arthur Hayes Predicts AI Infrastructure Boom Could Trigger Credit Crisis

BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes warns that debt-fueled AI infrastructure spending may cause a 2008-style financial collapse, potentially driving Bitcoin to $1 million.

BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes predicts that a debt-fueled boom in artificial intelligence infrastructure could trigger a credit crisis comparable to the 2008 financial collapse. Hayes argues that investors are incorrectly treating spending on power infrastructure and data centers as high-growth technology investments when they are actually leveraged real estate plays.

To support the scale of this risk, reports show that Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle have committed approximately $1.09 trillion to future data center leases. Hayes specifically notes that Oracle faces heightened risk because its lease durations exceed its customer contracts.

Hayes suggests that a government liquidity response to such a crisis would likely drive the price of Bitcoin to $1 million or higher. In the shorter term, he expects Bitcoin to fluctuate between $50,000 and $70,000 and forecasts that Ether will reach $5,000 by the end of the year. His investment firm, Pacific Rim Uprising, intends to build a significant position in Ether based on these projections.
