India Mandates Indian Standard Time for All Official Purposes

The Government of India notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, on August 27, establishing Indian Standard Time (IST) as the single common time reference for all legal, administrative, commercial, and official purposes nationwide. Part of the 'One Nation, One Time' initiative, the rules mandate synchronized timestamps for critical infrastructure, including banking, digital payments, telecommunications, power grids, and transport systems.

A primary objective of the policy is to reduce dependence on foreign satellite-based timing sources. To achieve this, the government is developing indigenous infrastructure and authorizing the use of NavIC, India's own satellite navigation system. Institutions and businesses have been granted a 180-day compliance window to upgrade their technical systems to meet the new standard.

To support the transition, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs commissioned a White Rabbit Technology-based demonstration network in Bengaluru in July 2026 to test IST dissemination. Further demonstrations of secure time transmission were conducted between Bengaluru and Chennai in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the National Stock Exchange, and the CSIR-National Physical Laboratory.
