Wisconsin DMV Issues Photo ID Guidance for November Election

The Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles is providing guidance and free temporary identification to residents needing photo IDs for the early November 2026 election.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles is providing guidance to residents regarding photo identification requirements for the election scheduled for early November 2026. Under state law, voters must present an approved photo ID at polling places to cast a ballot.

Officials clarified that while standard Wisconsin driver licenses or state ID cards are sufficient, a federally-compliant REAL ID is not required for voting. There is also no specific Voter ID card. To obtain a first-time ID, residents must provide proof of identity, residency, and U.S. citizenship at a DMV Customer Service Center.

For citizens unable to obtain a physical ID card before the election or those lacking necessary documentation, the DMV offers a free ID Petition Process. This process provides a temporary receipt that serves as a valid form of identification at the polls while the full application is processed. The Wisconsin Elections Commission remains the primary resource for voter registration status, polling location information, and general election rules.
