Greg Abel Takes Control of Berkshire Hathaway Portfolio

Greg Abel has assumed control of Berkshire Hathaway's $354 billion investment portfolio following the retirement of Warren Buffett as CEO.

Greg Abel assumed control of the $354 billion investment portfolio of Berkshire Hathaway following the retirement of Warren Buffett as CEO on December 31. Howard Buffett became the chairman of the board on September 18, while Warren Buffett transitioned to the role of chair emeritus.

The company continues to prioritize value investing despite the leadership shift. Since mid-July 2018, Warren Buffett and Greg Abel executed more than $82 billion in share repurchases of Berkshire Hathaway stock.

These buybacks were paused for 21 months between June 2024 and February 2026. The company halted repurchases during this period because the stock traded at a 60% to 80% premium to book value.
