Xavier Becerra Leads Steve Hilton in California Governor Race
Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra holds a substantial polling lead over Republican Steve Hilton ahead of their single one-on-one gubernatorial debate in Los Angeles.
Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra holds a commanding lead over Republican opponent Steve Hilton in the race for Governor of California. Recent polling indicates a significant gap in support, with a UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies survey placing Becerra at 58% and Hilton at 33%. This 25-point margin represents a seven-point increase for Becerra since August. A separate September poll from the Public Policy Institute of California shows Becerra with 60% support compared to Hilton's 38%, noting strong backing from 93% of Democrats and 57% of independent voters.
The candidates met for their only one-on-one debate before the November 3 general election on Wednesday evening in Los Angeles. Becerra, a former congressman and health secretary, focused on projecting executive capability. Hilton, a former Fox News host, attempted to present feasible policy alternatives to the current administration.
Key points of contention during the campaign include homelessness and the high cost of living in California. While Hilton has received an endorsement from Donald Trump, analysts suggest this may be a vulnerability due to Trump's unpopularity with some California voters. Favorability ratings further favor Becerra, who is viewed favorably by 48% of likely voters, while Hilton is viewed favorably by 35% and unfavorably by 51%.
