Indian Bond Markets Face Pressure From Rising Inflation
Indian bond markets are under pressure as rising inflation and a weakening rupee increase the likelihood of interest-rate hikes by the Reserve Bank of India.
Indian bond markets are experiencing significant pressure driven by a combination of accelerating inflation and a weakening rupee. Inflation in September reached an almost two-year high, pushing the rate toward the upper limit of the 2% to 6% tolerance band maintained by the Reserve Bank of India. This trend increases the probability that the central bank will implement further interest-rate hikes to stabilize prices.
The decline of the rupee has exacerbated these risks by raising the cost of imports, which further fuels inflationary pressure. These macroeconomic headwinds coincided with volatility in the equity markets on Monday, where the benchmark Nifty 50 fell 0.7%. The index underperformed broader Asian markets during a regional selloff that specifically targeted artificial intelligence stocks.
Despite the broader market instability, some corporate sectors showed resilience. HCLTech reported September-quarter profits that exceeded analyst estimates, providing a contrast to the general downward trend in the equity and bond markets.
