The 210-208 vote allowed Republicans to advance a series of bills, including a resolution condemning socialism and the Northeast Lobstermen Protection Act.

Representatives Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez stated their votes were intended to protect fishermen from environmental regulations. Golden sponsored the lobstermen act, while Gluesenkamp Perez reportedly voted to support her colleague's legislative priorities. The move initially sparked outrage among Democratic leadership, who characterized the defections as a "significant breach of trust." Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee Jim McGovern expressed anger over the lack of communication regarding the votes.

Democratic leaders initially sought disciplinary action through the Committee on Caucus Rules, discussing penalties such as requiring the members to pay full annual campaign dues to remain in good standing. However, Jeffries later shifted his tone, describing the situation as a "family discussion" and emphasizing that the caucus values every member. The incident has raised questions about Jeffries' ability to maintain unity between centrist and progressive members as he positions himself as a potential future House speaker.
