Doug Ford Orders PC Caucus to Repay Hotel Expenses
Premier Doug Ford ordered Progressive Conservative MPPs to repay thousands in hotel expenses and announced the elimination of the rule allowing such claims for Toronto-area members.
Premier Doug Ford ordered members of the Ontario Progressive Conservative caucus to repay thousands of dollars in taxpayer-funded hotel expenses after revelations that Toronto-area MPPs used a "special circumstances" rule to bill the government for accommodations. The controversy intensified following disclosures that Tourism, Culture and Gaming Minister Stan Cho billed $16,203 for hotel stays between 2023 and 2026, despite residing only 5.9 kilometers from the provincial legislature at Queen's Park.
Other significant claims include over $27,000 by MPP Hardeep Grewal, nearly $19,000 by Nina Tangri, and over $15,000 by Charmaine Williams. In total, 20 PC MPPs billed approximately $121,000 since 2023. Ford characterized the spending as "totally unacceptable" and announced that the government would eliminate the rule that permits hotel claims for members living within 50 kilometers of the legislature.
Government House Leader Steve Clark notified the Speaker of his intent to scrap the expense category via the Board of Internal Economy. However, opposition leaders Marit Stiles and John Fraser condemned the spending as an abuse of the public purse. Liberal and NDP members are demanding a full, date-by-date accounting of all expenses, with some arguing that eliminating the rule without a transparent audit is an attempt to bury the extent of the abuse.
