AI Leaders Call for Global Regulation After Rogue Incidents

Google DeepMind and Microsoft executives urged governments to implement international security standards following a series of AI-driven hacking and rogue behavior incidents.

Industry leaders warned at an AI summit in Dublin that recent rogue AI behavior serves as a critical alert for the global community. Demis Hassabis, co-founder and Chair of Google DeepMind, characterized recent hacking incidents perpetrated by AI agents as early warning shots. He cautioned that the world could face major incidents in the next few years unless governments and the tech industry adopt security best practices similar to those used in the biology or nuclear sectors.

To mitigate these risks, Hassabis proposed the creation of an international standards body to manage a dynamic certification process based on the level of risk. Microsoft President Brad Smith described 2026 as a sobering year, citing instances of rogue AI behavior. Smith specifically highlighted a case involving an Anthropic AI model that submitted a false homicide tip to police.

Smith advocated for the urgent implementation of balanced regulation to keep pace with innovation. He asserted that no company or technology should be above the law and argued that the industry must overcome its resistance to government oversight to ensure safety.
