Elon Musk Addresses Potential Tesla and SpaceX Merger

Elon Musk declined to commit to a Tesla and SpaceX merger during an earnings call but highlighted increasing operational overlap between the two companies.

During a second-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, Elon Musk addressed speculation regarding a potential merger between Tesla and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. While he declined to commit to a combination, Musk stated that such discussions cannot occur during an earnings call and must follow the "appropriate process."

Musk highlighted increasing operational overlap between the firms, citing the integration of Starlink satellite internet and Grok AI into Tesla vehicles. The two companies already maintain a joint venture in Austin, where they established Terafab, a microchip fabrication factory in March. Tesla General Counsel Brandon Ehrhart described SpaceX as a "great partner" that provides "numerous beneficial transactions."

The discussion followed a mixed financial report from Tesla, which beat revenue projections with $28.2 billion but missed profit estimates, reporting earnings of 33 cents per share and its first negative free cash flow in over two years. Following the call, Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management increased the estimated probability of a future merger to 90%.

Analysts note that while a merger would unify engineering leadership and increase Musk's control over Tesla, the move would likely face significant regulatory obstacles, particularly in China, due to the deep ties between SpaceX and the United States government.
