Daniel Ortega Declares End of Elections in Nicaragua

President Daniel Ortega announced on July 19, 2026, that Nicaragua will no longer hold elections as a mechanism for the opposition to reach power. Speaking in Managua during a rally commemorating the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista revolution, Ortega declared that the era of political parties backed by the United States and the former Somoza regime is over. He stated his intention to work with the party-controlled National Assembly to pass laws creating a legal wall or barrier against those he described as coup plotters and traitors.

This announcement effectively cancels the vote originally scheduled for November 2027, following previous constitutional reforms that extended the presidential term to six years. Ortega and his wife and co-president, Rosario Murillo, have consolidated power since 2007 through constitutional rewrites, the imprisonment of political rivals, and the shuttering of thousands of organizations. Rights groups characterize this move as a formal transition toward one-party rule and an entrenched dictatorship.

During the event, Ortega defended the 2018 crackdown on protesters as a response to a U.S.-backed coup attempt and condemned a January 2026 U.S. military operation in Venezuela that captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. The United States government, which does not recognize Ortega's presidency, has imposed sanctions on over 2,350 Nicaraguan officials and conditioned diplomatic resolution on the restoration of free elections.
