Save Democracy Group Demands Probe Into Osun Election Violence

The Save Democracy Group is calling for investigations into 14 deaths and alleged incitement by Senator Francis Fadahunsi during the Osun State governorship election.

The Save Democracy Group, a bipartisan caucus of the Nigerian House of Representatives, is demanding a full investigation into violence and fatalities following the 2026 Osun State governorship election. The group cited reports of 56 violent incidents and 14 deaths, while the Nigerian Police Force is currently investigating 30 suspected politically motivated killings.

Lawmakers specifically called for a probe into a viral video allegedly showing Senator Francis Fadahunsi inciting supporters to attack members of the Accord Party in Ilesa. While Fadahunsi has denied the allegations, the group insists he must be prosecuted if evidence establishes an offense.

The caucus criticized the Federal Government for the unprecedented scale of security deployment in Osun, arguing that resources were concentrated there while states like Kebbi and Sokoto continue to suffer from persistent banditry and terrorist attacks. They urged the government to publish its security assessment and deployment framework to justify these priorities.

Additionally, the group called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a post-election review to address procedural weaknesses before the 2027 general elections. The lawmakers also urged the National Assembly to reconvene from its recess to address the broader national security crisis.
