JD Vance Cuts $30 Billion in U.S. Abortion Aid

Vice President JD Vance announced sweeping restrictions on U.S. funding for international NGOs, foreign governments, and United Nations agencies that promote abortion access, gender-affirming care, and diversity initiatives. Part of the Trump administration's America First Global Health Strategy, the policy shift potentially affects $30 billion in aid and aims to export conservative family values globally.

The U.S. Department of State defended the measures, stating that American tax dollars should reflect American values and support life-saving programs rather than funding left-wing social agendas or abortion-related activities.

These policy changes coincide with increased financial activity from U.S. anti-abortion nonprofits and religious groups, including Focus on the Family and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which spent over $25 million across Africa between 2019 and 2024. This influence is evident in Ghana, where representatives from 20 African countries finalized a draft charter rejecting sexual and reproductive health rights for a future African Union vote. In Kenya, an appeals court recently overturned a ruling that had affirmed abortion access as a fundamental right.

Reproductive health providers, including Marie Stopes International and the International Planned Parenthood Federation, report a rise in harassment, legal targeting, and detentions of staff in Congo, Ethiopia, and Kenya. Healthcare providers warn that these restrictions drive women toward unsafe illicit abortions, contributing to high maternal mortality rates across sub-Saharan Africa.
