UK Hiring Stabilizes Ending 45-Month Downturn

UK hiring held steady in July, marking the end of a nearly four-year downturn according to a joint survey by the REC and KPMG.

UK hiring stabilized in July, ending a 45-month downturn that began during the 2022 administration of Liz Truss. A joint survey by the Recruitment & Employment Confederation and KPMG shows that temporary vacancies rose for the first time in two years. Wage growth reached a six-month high, with the strongest acceleration seen among senior staff possessing technology skills.

Demand for permanent staff continues to decline, though it is doing so at the slowest pace since September 2024. Growth in permanent roles was specifically noted within the IT, engineering, and medical care sectors. This stabilization coincides with the start of Prime Minister Andy Burnham's term, during which he pledged to reduce youth unemployment.

Despite the positive trend, analysts indicate that a sustained recovery remains dependent on the upcoming October budget and the Bank of England's response to energy-related inflation shocks.
