Democrats Win Supermajorities in Colorado State Elections
Democratic candidates won every state-wide office and secured supermajorities in both chambers of the Colorado Legislature during the 2026 elections.
The Democratic Party won every state-wide office and secured supermajorities in both the Colorado House and Senate in the 2026 elections. Preliminary results show the party holding a 49-16 majority in the state House and a 24-11 majority in the state Senate. This legislative control, combined with the victory of Governor-elect Philip J. Weiser, grants Democrats the power to override gubernatorial vetoes and place constitutional amendments on the ballot.
Key shifts occurred in several districts, including the 5th Congressional District where Jessica Killin defeated incumbent Jeff Crank. In the state Senate, Devin Funk defeated Republican Representative John Carson in District 8, while Stephanie Vigil reclaimed her seat in House District 34. The results were driven by high turnout among Democratic and unaffiliated voters alongside a decrease in Republican participation.
Beyond legislative seats, Colorado voters passed Proposition NN, which pauses the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights spending cap for the first time since 2005. This measure is expected to provide approximately $500 million in additional funding for K-12 education next year. While the outcome provides a clear mandate for Democratic policy goals, observers note that maintaining voter trust will require a focus on inflation and affordability.
