Myanmar Verifies 308,797 Rohingya Refugees for Potential Return

The military-backed government of Myanmar verified over 300,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh as former residents but delayed their return pending security improvements in Rakhine State.

The Government of Myanmar announced in mid-August 2026 that it has verified 308,797 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh as former residents of Rakhine State. This verification follows a review of 828,824 names submitted by Bangladesh by July 31, 2026. While this marks a significant acknowledgment of eligibility for return, the government stated that repatriation will only proceed once security conditions in Rakhine State stabilize.

The region remains a conflict zone as the Myanmar military fights the Arakan Army, an ethnic armed group seeking greater autonomy. Beyond the verified residents, Myanmar officials identified 4,241 individuals on the list as being involved in terrorist activities and noted that 113,507 people could not be verified. The government also disputed displacement figures, asserting that 540,000 people crossed into Bangladesh after the 2017 crackdown, rejecting claims that over a million were displaced.

Separately, a dispute exists regarding refugees in Malaysia. While Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim claimed Myanmar agreed to take back 5,000 Rohingya, Myanmar's foreign ministry initially maintained the program only applied to verified nationals in detention centers. Later reports indicated Myanmar agreed to accept 5,000 asylum seekers from Malaysia, though the Malaysian government has conditioned the return on safety guarantees for the individuals.
