Wall Street Faces Volatility Amid TSMC Expansion Reports
Wall Street experienced a volatile trading session on Tuesday as semiconductor gains clashed with widening credit spreads and rising Treasury yields.
Wall Street saw a volatile trading session on Tuesday marked by diverging asset movements. Semiconductor stocks ended slightly higher following reports that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company may expand its operations into Dallas, Texas.
Despite the gains in chips, other market indicators showed significant stress. Credit spreads widened, long-dated Treasury yields rose, and oil prices declined. Rich Privorotsky of Goldman Sachs described the session as one of the more disturbing cross-asset days of the current episode.
Privorotsky attributed the instability to extreme volatility in rates and the potential unwinding of the yen carry trade. He noted that high real rates are necessary for fiscally dominant economies to fund sovereign borrowing, which subsequently increases the hurdle rate for equities.
