US Embassy Warns of Attacks on Ethiopian Military Sites

The United States Embassy in Addis Ababa warned American citizens of possible long-range attacks targeting Ethiopian military installations in October 2026.

The United States Embassy in Addis Ababa issued a security alert in October 2026 warning American citizens of possible long-range attacks targeting Ethiopian military installations. While the embassy initially reported the threats as possible, it later confirmed awareness of several such instances occurring during the month.

US citizens are urged to avoid travel to the Amhara, Tigray, and Afar regions for any reason, including the town of Lalibela. Those already present in these areas are advised to leave if safe to do so or shelter in place. The embassy noted that while the security situation in Addis Ababa remains stable, northern Ethiopia continues to experience sporadic armed conflict and civil unrest.

The advisory highlighted that the Amhara region has faced violence between government forces and armed groups, while Tigray continues to deal with post-conflict challenges following a 2022 peace agreement. The embassy also cautioned that disinformation regarding the security situation is rampant on social media, urging citizens to rely on verified news outlets and review their personal security plans.
