EDF Energy Chief Urges Approval of North Sea Oil Projects

The head of EDF Energy, Simone Rossi, has called for the approval of the Rosebank and Jackdaw oil and gas projects in the North Sea. Rossi described the developments as a "no-brainer" and argued that utilizing domestic resources reduces emissions compared to importing energy from abroad. He stated that the projects do not contradict net zero goals and would generate tax revenue to help households pay energy bills.
Rossi's position aligns with the Labour party's manifesto, which permits production in existing or adjacent fields while prohibiting new exploration licenses. He is joined in this support by other renewables leaders and members of the Liberal Democrat party.
Opposition to the projects comes from the Green party and various environmental groups, who are pressuring the government to deny consent following recent heatwaves. The Government of the United Kingdom is expected to reach a decision within weeks, though reports indicate the announcement may be delayed until after the October 8 Holborn and St Pancras byelection.
