Democrats Win Wisconsin Trifecta to Pursue Progressive Agenda

Democrats gained control of the Wisconsin governorship and both legislative chambers for the first time in 16 years, planning to use a $3 billion surplus for social spending.

Democrats achieved a state trifecta in Wisconsin following Tuesday's election, gaining control of the governorship and both chambers of the state Legislature for the first time in 16 years. Governor-elect David Crowley, who won with the largest margin since 1998, will lead the new administration alongside presumptive legislative leaders Greta Neubauer and Dianne Hesselbein.

The incoming leadership intends to utilize a state surplus of more than $3 billion to prioritize affordability and social services. Their agenda includes lowering costs for housing, utilities, healthcare, and childcare, while increasing public school funding, legalizing cannabis, and expanding abortion access. Neubauer, expected to become Assembly Speaker, stated the trifecta would end decades of Republican obstructionism.

Outgoing Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos criticized the Democratic platform, claiming the party offered few specifics and warning voters to hold on to their wallets. Vos stated that Republicans would offer constructive alternatives to prevent the growth of government. While Hesselbein expressed a willingness to work across the aisle for the common good, the new Democratic majority must manage slim margins and a caucus split between progressives and centrists. The next legislative session begins in January.
